We are academic researchers — computer scientists, mathematicians and social scientists — interested in cooperation in Minecraft and human society generally. We run two Minecraft servers and develop collaboration tools to help server admins to build strong, friendly and collaborative communities.

Our research involves a lot of experimentation. We analyse how our collaboration tools impact the community and how they are used. In order to do so, we record player data from several Minecraft servers. If you are interested in participating, install our plugins or play on one of our featured servers.

If you have questions, feedback or ideas about our servers, tools or research, feel free to contact us at contact@heapcraft.net or @HeapCraft.

People

  • Stephan

Stephan Müller studied Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich and initiated the HeapCraft plugin while writing his masters thesis about player collaboration in Minecraft. He developed all plugins and analytics tools available on this website and provides technical support.

  • Seth

Seth Frey studies human decision behavior in complex social environments, approaching computational social science from the perspectives of behavioral game theory and cognitive science. He is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Dartmouth College's interdisciplinary William H. Neukom Institute for Computational Science. Before Dartmouth, he was a postdoctoral researcher at Disney Research, a part of Walt Disney Imagineering. In 2013, he earned a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science and Informatics at Indiana University.

  • Severin

Severin Klingler is a PhD candidate at ETH Zurich in the department of computer science. He is interested in leveraging methods from machine learning and statistics to model user behavior within computer systems such as learning environments for students.

  • Barbara Solenthaler is a senior research scientist at the Computer Graphics Laboratory at ETH Zurich. She received the PhD degree in computer science from the University of Zurich in 2009, before joining the ETH Computer Science Department. Her research interests include the development of new methods for physics-based simulations, medical applications and computer-aided and game-based learning.

  • Mubbasir

Mubbasir Kapadia is an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science Department at Rutgers University. Previously, he was an Associate Research Scientist at Disney Research Zurich. Kapadia's research aims to develop integrated solutions for full-body character animation, planning based control, behavior authoring, and statistical analysis of autonomous virtual human simulations.
